PSG awarded Ligue 1 title after season called off due to COVID-19
Paris Saint-Germain have been declared the 2019/2020 Ligue 1 Champions after the season was ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is the Parisians’ seventh French title in eight years.
Ligue 1 was called off on Thursday last week after it had been suspended in March due to a government order banning sporting activities to curb the spread of COVID-19.
At the time, PSG were at the top of the table with 68 points from 27 games, 12 points ahead of second placed Marseille.
The decision to end Ligue one was made by the French Professional Football League (LFP) two days after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe suspended sport in the country until at least September.
“The LFP Board of Directors has decided to announce the final standings of Ligue 1 Conforama and Domino’s Ligue 2 in application of the rules already adopted by the FFF for all of its championships,” a statement by Ligue 1 read.
“The Ligue 1 Conforama final standings are based on an average of points earned per match played. In case of a tied average, head to head results will be used to separate clubs.”
Ligue 1 is the second top European league to be cancelled after the Dutch league was cancelled on April 24.
The Dutch Football Authority (KNVB) however decided not to award the title to any team. There will also be no relegation or promotion.
