At least five people were killed and 18 others injured in November as a result of flooding, landslides, and lightning caused by torrential rains across Rwanda, the Ministry of Emergency Management said.

The rains also destroyed or damaged houses, classroom blocks, plantations, and roads, the ministry said Tuesday in an update covering November 1-24.

The hardest-hit districts include Gakenke, Gasabo, Rutsiro, Gisagara, Kamonyi, Gatsibo, Ngororero, and Rusizi.

Philippe Habinshuti, the ministry’s permanent secretary, urged people living in high-risk zones to relocate to safer areas.

In May last year, floods and landslides struck western and northern Rwanda, resulting in the death of 135 people.
