El-Badry was appointed on Thursday to take over the position left vacant by Mexican Javier Aguirre, who was sacked in July following the Pharaohs’ elimination from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in the round of 16.
“During our meeting on 18 September, we decided to appoint Hossam El-Badry as head coach for the national team and to choose his staff to be presented to the board,” a statement from EFA read.
El-Badry’s choice put to an end speculation over the role, which sparked nationwide debate on the best suited candidate.
The 59-year-old was shortlisted alongside former manager Hassan Shehata, former Tottenham and Ajax striker Ahmed “Mido” Hossam, former Egyptian striker Hossam Hassan and Masry coach Ihab Galal.
As a player, el-Badry made 18 appearances for The Pharaohs playing as a defender.
He has previously served as manager of Al-Ahly, Enppi, Ahly of Tripoli and Al-Merrikh. He also coached Egypt’s U-23 team.
He has been away from the field since leaving Al-Ahly in 2018.
His first competitive match in charge of The Pharaohs is expected to be in October.
