The Ethiopian Airlines Group and global aerospace company Boeing on Tuesday announced an agreement for the airline to purchase eight 777-9 passenger airplanes, with potential for up to 12 additional aircraft orders.

In a statement, the East African airline said the new fleet will offer reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

“We are pleased to continue setting the trend in African aviation for adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance our services and customer satisfaction,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew.

“Improving our operational performance and commitment to environmental sustainability, the 777-9 offers more flexibility, reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions. We are grateful to Boeing for their long-standing partnership and support, and we eagerly anticipate flying the 777-9 across the African skies and beyond,” he added.

The airline said it will continue to explore opportunities with Boeing to further develop the country’s aerospace industry, including industrial development, training capabilities at the Ethiopian Aviation University, and STEM education.

The order from Ethiopian Airlines also comes as Boeing faces increased scrutiny due to a January 5 incident when a door plug blew off a brand new 737 MAX plane mid-flight.
