
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets President El-Sisi in Cairo
Pompeo is visiting Egypt as part of his tour of the Middle East, which will also see him travel to Gulf Arab states – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait.
A statement released by Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino after the Secretary of State’s meeting with President el-Sisi said the two discussed security issues including the situation in Iran.
“The Secretary reiterated the United States’ commitment to the strategic partnership with Egypt and in its fight against our common security threats, including terrorism and the Iranian regime’s malign influence. The Secretary thanked President Sisi for his leadership in advancing religious tolerance, including by promoting the equality of all Egyptians,” the statement read in part
During his stay in Egypt, Pompeo will also hold talks with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry before delivering a speech at the American University in Cairo on Washington’s broader Middle East objectives.
