Gabon’s main opposition party has distanced itself from the attempted coup on Monday.
Local media report a spokesperson for the Coalition for the New Republic party, Claye Martial Obame Akué, to say that he wasn’t aware of any links between the soldiers behind the coup attempt and jean Ping, the leader of the coalition.
He said that none of the soldiers were close to Ping.
He however added that President Ali Bongo Ondimba should leave power, claiming that Ping won the 2016 election.
The Central African country was hit by a coup attempt early on Monday, as junior officers tried to topple the government in the absence of President Ali Bongo.
Five soldiers were arrested after taking over a national radio and calling for their fellow soldiers to rise against the government.
