Xi’s special envoy to attend Brazilian presidential inauguration

Chinese President Xi Jinping will send a special envoy to attend the inauguration of Brazilian president-elect Jair Bolsonaro on 1 January 2019.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Thursday announced that Ji Bingxuan will attend the swearing in ceremony in President Xi’s stead.
Ji is the vice chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee.
His attendance of Bolsonaro’s inauguration comes at the invitation of the Brazilian government.
Bolsonaro beat left-leaning Workers’ Party candidate Fernando Haddad in the presidential election runoff on October 28.
Bolsonaro, a 63-year-old ex-army captain turned politician, has been a congressman since the early 1990s. He now represents the Social Liberal Party.
