Former South Africa president Jacob Zuma has joined social media platform Twitter.
Zuma made the announcement on Friday posting a video of him, in what he termed as a bid to “move with the times”.
Apart from Twitter, the former president will also open accounts on Facebook and Instagram.
During his tenure, Zuma steered clear of social media platforms, but made the move for what he terms as a way to correct the wrong narratives about him circulating on social media.
I have decided to move with times to join this important area of conversation because I hear many people are talking about me as well as others calling themselves Zuma in many ways. I’ve felt that it’s necessary to join and be part of the conversation and join the people in their discussions,” Zuma said on his Twitter video.

The move caused a stir in South Africa, with many social media users rushing to welcome him.
Among notable respondents to his post, was Economic Freedom Fighters president Julius Malema who simply told him “Welcome Baba”.

Zuma resigned as president in February after falling out of favor with the ruling ANC party over a string of corruption scandals linked to him.
The former president faces 16 charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering stemming from hundreds of payments made to him in relation to the South Africa arms procurement deal.
Zuma denies any wrongdoing.
