Nigerian opposition accuses government of freezing VP candidate’s bank account

Nigeria’s main opposition party has accused authorities of freezing the bank accounts of its vice presidential candidate in the run-up to the country’s February elections.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) says accounts belonging to Peter Obi, his wife, other family members and their businesses have been blocked by government agencies. The party did not however identify them.
“Why is the presidency on a wild goose chase in investigating Peter Obi, who left office as Governor of Anambra state five years ago with a nationally acclaimed clean record,” a statement from PDP read in part.
February’s election will see incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari seek to retain his seat, though he faces strong opposition from PDP, whose candidate is his former ally, Atiku Abubakar.
