Egypt says no to hosting AFCON 2019
Egypt has no interest in playing host to the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
The Egyptian Football Association said Thursday, the country will not launch a bid to host the AFCON after Cameroon were stripped as host of the continental event.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is looking for new hosts after its executive committee unanimously voted to strip the nation of the hosting rights.
Morocco and South Africa are seen as favorites to host the AFCON 2019. But already Morocco has stepped in to host the 2018 African Nations Championship after Kenya was deemed not ready.
According to reports, board member of the Egyptian Football Association, Ahmed Meghad has ruled out any possibility of hosting the event if Morocco files interest.
“After an EFA meeting on Tuesday, we decided we will not make a bid for the next Afcon,” EFA board member and spokesman Ahmed Megahed said.
“We will not compete with another Arabic country – this is an official decision,” Megahed told local media outside the EFA headquarters in Cairo.
CAF stripped Cameroon of hosting rights last Friday because of delay in preparations for the tournament.
