Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for peace after a narrow election win that saw him garner 50.8% of the vote, according to the country’s electoral commission.
Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Priscilla Chigumba said Mnangagwa was “duly declared elected President of the republic of Zimbabwe, with effect from 3 August 2018”, at a press conference.
The result has been rubbished by his main challenger Nelson Chamisa, who demanded that proper and verified results be released.
“The ZEC scandal of releasing unverified fake results is regrettable. ZEC denied our election agent access to results be4 announcement… The level of opaqueness, truth deficiency, moral decay & values deficit is baffling,” Chamisa said in a tweet.
The election was the first since the ousting of former President Robert Mugabe in November last year. Mugabe recently threw his weight behind Chamisa.
There have been mixed reactions to the election that was largely peace, even as six people died in a crackdown on protests by the opposition.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also congratulated the new president and called for calm in Zimbabwe.
His compatriot, Julius Malema, called on all peace-loving Zimbabweans to accept the result.
