Former U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Kenya on Sunday for the first time since he left office in 2017.
Obama on Monday graced the opening of a sports and training center that his half sister, Auma Obama founded through her charitable foundation.
On arrival on Sunday he held separate talks with both President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga on youth empowerment and the Building Bridges Initiative set up by the two leaders in March this year.
This is Obama’s fifth visit to the East African nation. His first three came before he rose to become the U.S. President in 2009. While in office, he visited the country once.
He is scheduled to fly to South Africa later on Monday where he will deliver 16th Nelson Mandela’s annual lecture, to commemorate the would be 100th birthday of the freedom struggle icon.
The theme of the lecture will be “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World.”
200 participants have been chosen to attend the lecture, from a pool of nearly 10,000 applicants.
