Kevin Anderson is now the first South African to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon following his win against Frenchman Gael Monfils.
In doing so he captured his first win in six attempts against Monfils. The win also put him in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time — at the 10th attempt.
Anderson will attempt to reach Wimbledon’s final four on Wednesday but in order to do so he will have to beat an eight-time Wimbledon champion, a man he hasn’t won a set against in four previous meetings, a man believed by many to be the best tennis player of all time – Roger Federer.
“I think it’s a pretty exciting opportunity to play Federer here at Wimbledon,” Anderson, who has served 96 aces in four rounds, told reporters.
“It’s obviously not easy. I feel like a lot of aspects of my game can give him a lot of trouble. I’m a big player, big serve.
“I’m going to have to really take it to him. Also at the same time try to treat it like another tennis match.”
Elsewhere, three-time Wimbledon champ Novak Djokivic advanced to the quarter-finals with a win over Russian Karen Khachanov.
The world’s top ranked men’s player, Rafael Nadal, Canada’s Milos Raonic, Japan’s Ken Nishikori and American John Isner also all advanced.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams is the best known of the remaining 8 players.
The top 10 seeds are gone and Williams has yet to lose a set in this year’s tournament. However she has yet to face a top 50 player.
Williams will face 52nd ranked Camila Giorgi next.
The other women quarter-final matchups have Kiki Bertens against Julia Gorges, Jelena Ostapenko v Dominika Cibulkova and Angelique Kerber v Daria Kasatkina.
