In what has been described as the biggest scalp so far in attempt to get to the bottom of graft allegations against former South Africa President Jacob Zuma, his son, Duduzane Zuma on Monday appeared at the Johannesburg Specialised Crime Court in relation to a corruption case filed in 2016.
Duduzane, 34, worked for the Gupta family, which is accused of corrupt dealings with Zuma’s government by being granted lucrative government contracts and influencing ministerial appointments.
He is alleged to have been part of attempts to bribe a former deputy finance minister to agree to a top role in government. The allegation is related to the activities of the controversial Gupta family who are accused of exerting undue influence over President Zuma.
Duduzane, who returned to South Africa last week to attend his brother’s funeral, was released on 100,000 rand ($7,439.76) bail with his case postponed to January 24, 2019.He was further ordered to hand in his passport.
“He is charged with corruption for offering undue gratification to a public officer,” National Prosecution Authority spokesman Phindi Mjonondwane told reporters.
The state is said to have agreed on his bail application because he was co-operating.He is however due in court on Thursday on culpable homicide charges over a deadly car crash in 2014.
Jacob Zuma 76, was forced to resign in February as criticism grew from within the ruling ANC party over multiple corruption scandals.
