South Sudan rivals reach power-sharing deal
South Sudanese opposition leader Riek Machar is set to be reinstated as Vice President, after the rival sides signed a power-sharing agreement in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
The two sides agreed that four Vice Presidents will work together with President Salva Kiir. The former rebel leader, Machar, will be the first. Further details of the power-sharing deal are being discussed in the coming days.
The deal looks like a repeat of a 2015 power-sharing deal between President Kiir and Machar, but which did not hold for long as both sides violated the agreements.
The ceasefire deal signed this month in Addis Ababa between president Kiir and Machar has also been violated already.
South Sudanese citizens, the international community, regional leaders and the U.N. however hope the peace deal will last, and that peace will reign in the world’s youngest nation.
Due to the war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, the country is ranked as Africa’s biggest refugee crisis, with the U.N. projecting that the most affected are women and children.
