“Spiderman” receives hero’s welcome upon return visit to Mali

The Malian migrant who was hailed as a hero after he dramatically rescued a small boy dangling from a balcony in Paris is set to meet Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

Mamoudou Gassama dubbed “spiderman” won widespread praise after climbing the outside of the building to save the four-year-old. He returned to Mali to a hero’s welcome.

He will be going back to France to sign his employment contract with the fire department on 28 June.

The video showing Gassama being cheered on by spectators as he pulled himself from balcony to balcony to the fourth floor caught the attention of the world and the French President Emmanuel Macron who welcomed him at the Elysee Palace to thank him for his heroic act.

The French president awarded him a medal for courage and said he would also be offered a role in the fire service. Being an illegal migrant, he was also given French citizenship.
