2018 World Cup: Nigeria quashes Cameroon’s hopes, Egypt seeks revenge against Uganda
Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon have failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia after only managing a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Yaounde on Monday.
Having gone down 4-0 in Lagos on Friday, the Indomitable Lions needed to beat the Super Eagles at home to keep their hopes for qualification alive.
Monday’s result means the Cameroonians have just three points from four matches, and cannot now finish top of Group B. Nigeria leads the group with 10 points from four matches, and will be as good as qualified should Algeria beat Zambia later tonight.
A host of other games are lined up today as more teams seek to strengthen their chase.
Group A’s top teams – The Democratic Republic of Congo and Tunisia – will face off in Kinshasa as the hosts seek to revenge their loss in Tunis last week. Tunisia leads the group with 9 points from three games while DR Congo is second with 6 points from three.
All Group C teams will be in action today, with Morocco playing Mali as Cote d’Ivoire face off with Gabon. The North Africans will be hoping Gabon can hold the Elephants and they get a win against Mali, results that would propel them to the top of the group. Currently, the Ivorians lead with 7 points from three games while Morocco comes second with 5 points.
All Group D teams will also play today, with each team still well in contention for qualification. South Africa will host Cape Verde while Burkina Faso plays Senegal. The Burkinabes lead the group with 5 points from three games while Senegal are second with four points from three games.
Group E will also have all teams out in action today with Egypt hoping to get a revenge against Uganda after last week’s loss in Kampala. Ghana will on the other hand host Congo, seeking a win to make up some lost ground. Uganda currently leads the group with 7 points from three while Egypt comes second with 6 points from three.
Outside Africa, some teams have already booked their spots in the 2018 Russian showdown, including hosts Russia, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Iran.
