Almost 100 inmates escaped from a prison in Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday, the latest in a string of jail breaks in the west African country, officials said, reports AFP.

A security source told AFP that the 96 inmates escaped between 0500 and 0600 GMT.

“The inmates went through the roof of their cells to get to other cell and took advantage of workers leaving to break the main gate and flee,” the judicial source said.

According to a local judicial source, the men who escaped in the central town of Katiola were followers of the late leader of a prison mutiny last year, Coulibaly Yacouba.

Yacouba was also famous for the name “Yacou le Chinois” (Yacou the Chinese”). He attempted to escape from Cote d’Ivoire’s main detention centre in Abidjan in February 2016 and got killed. This prison break caused 10 death including a guard and 21 others were injured.

Yacouba had been jailed since 2012 on charged of “assassination and murder” and led the prison mutiny with a Kalashnikov in hand and another slung across his shoulder.

According to Reuters, 10 of the inmates have been captured.

This is the third reported jail break in Cote d’Ivoire in the past one month. The first was happened in south-central city of Gagnoa and 5 escaped, the second was two days ago at Abidjan courthouse and 20 escaped.
