Nigerian military says it has killed top Boko Haram commanders
The Nigerian Army on Thursday said government forces had killed five top commanders of terror group Boko Haram as troops intensify efforts to smoke out their remnants in the northeast region.
Army spokesman Sani Usman said in a statement that a “large number” of Boko Haram fighters and their leaders were neutralized in artillery bombardment and air strike by the government forces.
The operation, undertaken based on credible intelligence information, targeted Boko Haram hideouts, according to the army spokesman.
“The Nigerian military would continue with the concerted onslaught on the reported Boko Haram terrorists’ locations till they have been eliminated,” he said.
Boko Haram has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 2.3 million others since its emergence in 2009.
