Guinea Bissau: Dialogue to resolve impasse between rival parties ongoing
Talks aimed at ending the political impasse in Guinea-Bissau are currently underway.
The United Nations representative Ibrahim Toure said essential conditions exist to implement the Conakry Agreement and resolve the country’s crisis.
While briefing the Security Council, Toure said tensions in Guinea-Bissau had reached a peak three months ago.
In recent weeks however, dialogue aimed at resolving the political impasse within the framework of the Conakry Agreement had resumed between the parties, looking ahead to legislative and presidential elections scheduled for 2018 and 2019, respectively.
He said requisite measures must be taken to create an environment conducive to the holding of free, peaceful and credible polls.
Toure said the resolution of the crisis in Guinea-Bissau requires continued engagement and support by the international community.
