South Africa reluctant over importation of genetically modified grain
The effects of the South African drought continue to be felt with imports of white and yellow maize increasing steadily, to meet local and regional demand.
There may be some pressure on white maize imports though.
In the previous season, South Africa imported 103,176 tons of white maize, and the expectation for the current season is to increase this volume by at least 10-fold.
The challenge facing importers of white maize from the US is that many of their crops are genetically modified, something that local regulators are loath to allow into the country, just yet.
