US forces have also been supporting the war against al Shabaab in Somalia, training special units and sometimes launching attacks targeting senior commanders of the group.

Somali forces say they’re making gains in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

A series of commando raids backed by US forces has seen the militant group lose small towns and villages in Lower Shabelle region.

The country’s army says it’s seized a number of towns and villages in the same region.

Aided by U.S. and African Union troops, the commandos raided and retook Barire, a small town located some 60 kilometers southwest of the capital.

While the American government hasn’t commented on the Barire raid, it’s not the first time the U.S. military has intervened in the fight against Al-Shabab in Somalia.
