Uganda asked to arrest Sudanese President Bashir by the International Criminal Court
Uganda has been asked to arrest Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir and hand over to the International Criminal Court (ICC)
“Uganda must face up to its international obligations and arrest Omar Al-Bashir who is wanted on charges of genocide,” said Muthoni Wanyeki, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes to the Standard newspaper
President Bashir arrived in Uganda this morning for the inauguration of President Museveni. According to Reuters Bashir is on a two day visit in Uganda which defies an international warrant for his arrest over accusations of genocide.
ICC issued arrest warrants for President Bashir in 2009 and 2010, accusing him of allegedly masterminding the genocide and other atrocities during his campaign against the revolution in Sudan’s western Darfur region.
Since Uganda is a member of the ICC, it is required to act on the arrest warrant. A similar incident occurred last year, when Bashir visited South Africa in June, however South Africa didn’t arrest him South Africa’s Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the government against a ruling that said the state had made an error in letting Bashir leave the country despite a court order .
