INTERVIEW: M-Pesa now handles 900 transactions per second
Kenya’s biggest mobile network operator, Safaricom has reported a 16.7% growth of pretax profit in its 2015 full year earnings.
The firm maintained its profitabiliy streak by posting 826.45 million dollars in returns before tax and costs thanks to continuous growth in data and its revolutionary mobile money service, the M-PESA.
Revenue from the platform grew 19.8% due to an increase in the number of active customers.
Kenyans use the service to send money and pay bills. Mobile data revenue increased by 42.7% thanks to increased uptake in bundles and growth in smartphone penetration in the country.
The operator controls 64.7% of Kenya’s market from 67% after changing its customer report methodology to customers that contribute to revenue in the last 90 days.
On an outlook basis, Safaricom will concentrate on cost reduction in transmission, network and information and technology
CCTV’s Peninah Karibe spoke to Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore and started by asking him what he attributes the continuing M-Pesa success to.
