At least 10 members of Christian religious group arrested in Uganda after hiding their children from being immunized saying their teachings bar them from immunization

An operation by police and health workers led to the immunization against polio for over 200 children forcefully in Uganda’s Maguye district.

A team of health workers, police and officials from the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) stormed into the homes of the Njiri Nkalu sect members causing the members to flee into the sugarcane fields but were easily caught because of the crying children.

“We don’t see why you bring all these guns to harass us. Our children are protected by God and we don’t need polio vaccines,” said Ms Sarah Namuwaya, a follower of the group to The Monitor

The team also stormed into homes of Tabliq Muslims who also refused the immunization of their children.

“Although the operation was a success, there are those who were tipped off and disappeared into the bushes with their children. We shall come back to get them,” said Mr Suleiman Baraza, Mayuge RDC
