War Photojournalist Adriane Ohanesian Wins Anja Niedringhaus Courage Photojournalism Award
Pictures indeed are worth a million words…
In her pictures coined ‘The Forgotten Mountains // Darfur, Sudan’ Photojournalist Adriane Ohanesian tells the story of Sudanese women and children hiding in caves to escape the attacks and aerial bombardment by the government forces… caught in the war against the rebel groups.
It is her courage to show the world the fate of people in conflicts neglected by the media that has brought war photojournalist Adriane Ohanesian to the lime light and awarded for the Photojournalism Award in the 2016 Anja Niedringhaus Courage Awards.
“At the end of the day it’s not about me; it’s about the lives of the people in the pictures,” Ohanesian said. “My photographs document what I’ve seen in isolated areas of the world. I hope the people I photograph feel that these photos communicate their circumstances to the outside world. It takes a massive amount of trust on the part of my subjects to know that I’m accurately representing them and their story.”
For the past six years, the New York-born, Nairobi-based photographer Adriane Ohanesian has been covering the war in Sudan and South Sudan and her “tenacious dedication” to the story has earned her the 2016 Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award, a prize launched by the International Women’s Media Foundation in memory of the Associated Press photographer murdered in Afghanistan in April 2014. Ohanesian pictures give an extraordinarily perceptive into places that the global community may not otherwise see,” the judges said as they awarded her a $20,000 cash prize to support her ongoing work reports The Times
The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award recognizes the exemplary work of women photojournalists who overcome extraordinary challenges to bring us images of pressing global issues and is named after the award winning German photographer Anja Niedringhaus who was killed in Afghanistan in 2014.
