As the International Labour Day was being marked around the world, in Nigeria, workers rallied around a demand to raise the country’s minimum wage by nearly 300%.

In Abuja, the seat of the country’s central government, thousands of workers and government officials added their voices to the call for a drastic shift in Nigeria’s minimum wage policy.

The West African nation’s Labour union is asking for an increase in the minimum wage, which stands at approximately $90, pushed up to over $250.

This is however not all that Nigeria’s working class have to worry about – Latest report from the Bureau of statistics show unemployment rate is on the rise and more workers could be laid off.

Before assuming office in May 29 last year, President Muhammadu Buhari pledged to fix the grievances in the the job market but that is yet to be realized.

But Nigeria’s economy has suffered a persistent decline as crude oil prices continue to remain low.

And the government is calling for patience.
