South Sudan wrestling tournament seeks to help unite the country
A new initiative has been launched to help bring unity in South Sudan. The National Wrestling for Peace tournament brings both fighters and crowds from across the country to jointly participate in a much loved traditional sport.
It’s another way of trying to bring peace amid an ongoing crisis in the country. Thumping an opponent to the ground is all part of a serious and well planned maneuver.
Dubbed the “Wrestling for Peace” competition, this matches are meant to bring a sense of calm even after rebel chief Riek Machar repeatedly postpone his return to Juba.
The competition brings fighters from across the country. However, it’s not the wrestling that’s supposedly going to bring back peace, but the fact that different communities are involved, hence promoting harmonious co-existence.
The wrestlers of Jonglei are presently leading the Wrestling for Peace Tournament but the ultimate prize is a unified country.
