Chad’s electoral commission has declared long serving leader Idriss Deby the winner of the April 10 elections, giving him a fifth term in office.

President Deby won the poll with 61.5% of the vote, defeating more than a dozen challengers.

Deby has been in power since 1990.

The announcement came one day after a visit by the United States’ envoy to the United Nations Samantha Power and top US military officials, a visit that highlighted Chad’s key role in the fight against Islamic militants in Africa.

The land-locked country is the base for France’s military operations in Africa as well as a regional force intended to wipe out Nigeria-based terror group Boko Haram.

The opposition withdrew from the electoral commission this week, citing credibility concerns.
