Kenya’s president in Djibouti for summit of Amisom contributing troops countries
Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has flown to Djibouti for a heads of state summit for countries that have contributed troops for the African Union Mission in Somalia.
The Summit will discuss and adopt a raft of proposals to revamp the mission’s operations in the war-torn Horn of Africa, with the aim of making it more effective in the war against the Islamist militia group al-Shabaab.
Amisom was created in 2007 by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council to help in the regional peacekeeping mission operated by the AU, with the approval of the United Nations (UN).
The countries that have contributed troops in the mission are Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Burundi.
In retaliation, al-Shabaab has increased attacks against these countries, especially Kenya.
Somalia has been riddled by the Islamists insurgency that has lasted for about a decade, hampering its development agenda.
