The 4-year-old was one of 116 people convicted in connection with 2014 riots by Muslim Brotherhood supporters. Ahmed Mansour Qurani Ali was sentenced to life in prison for four counts of murder before case of mistaken identity came to light.
The Egyptian military has admitted that one of its courts mistakenly sentenced a four-year-old boy to life in prison for committing murder. A spokesman, Col Mohammed Samir, said a 16-year-old with a similar name should have been sentenced.
Ahmed Mansour Qurani Ali was among more than 115 people convicted last week in connection with riots by Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Fayoum province in 2014,
However, in a Facebook post, Col Samir said Ahmed Mansour Qurani Sharara, 16, should actually have been convicted. The mistake happened despite the fact a lawyer for the boy’s family submitted documents showing that he was one at the time of the disturbances.
The lawyer said court officials failed to path his birth certificate to the judge, and he was then convicted of four counts of murder and eight counts of attempted murder.
