Over a million people at the Kenyan coast hit by water crisis as the Water Board cuts supply over 1 billion Kenyan shilling debt (About 9.8 US dollars)

Coast Water Services Board cut the water supply at the Baricho Water Works in Kilifi County due to failure by the water firms in three counties in the coastal region to clear the debts amounting to over 1 billion Kenyan shillings.

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to the Baricho Water Works where he unveiled a 572 million water project that is expected to increase water supply from 90 million to 112 million litres a day by June next year.

Water shortage’s impact can be felt on the coastal main source of income which is the hotels, in Mombasa, Malindi and Kilifi towns. According to local newspaper the Nation, Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers stated that more than 100 hotels, villas and cottages in Kilifi County alone have been hit by the water shortages.

The Water Board cut water supply in October 2015 over a 1.2 billion debt but the supply was restored after the intervention of the Water Cabinet Secretary.
