Narok-clashes

More than 2000 people spent their Christmas day in the cold after 250 houses were torched leaving four people injured in Narok, Kenya.

The ethnic violence erupted after two herders were killed in the controversial Maasai Mau Narok forest in Narok on Wednesday night. The two communities Kalenjins and Maasai torched each other’s homes in retaliatory attacks after the two Maasai herdsmen were shot dead and nine cattle went missing.

According to Citizen at least one person has perished from the attacks. On Sunday, Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in Narok following the eruption of the clashes. According to the Interior cabinet secretary more than ten people have been hospitalized.

The criminals behind the killing of the herdsmen have not been identified. More than 100 police officers have been deployed to the area according to the local newspaper Nation.

Hundreds are camping at a local school (Township Primary School) displaced by the continuing violence.

The two herders who were shot were among a group that was grazing their cattle in the Kass area of the forest where a number of squatters who illegally occupied the Olpusimoru block of Mau Forest were evicted in September after the government set up police camps in readiness for a fresh round of evictions according to the Nation.
