A US born Islamic insurgent, who is believed to have participated in the planning of a terror attack on a Kenyan University earlier this year, surrendered to the Somali military over the weekend, News24 reports.

Abdimalik Jones is said to have defected from the Islamist extremists group, Al-Shabaab, to a militia backing the Islamic State.

He surrendered near the southern port town of Barawe in the Lower Shabelle region, the town’s mayor Hussein Mohamed Barre in reported to have said.

“We found him as he was hiding himself somewhere near Barawe after defected from al Shabaab,” Barre said.

“Our troops ordered him to surrender and he did so.”

Al-Shabaab militants attacked Garrisa University in North Eastern Kenya in April, killing at least 148 people.

Jones is due to be transferred to Mogadishu for further investigation.
