African countries have had different practice of democratic elections with at least 35 nations having free and fair elections while the others fall short. What progress have African states made so far in elections? What are the challenges that lie ahead?

There has been quite a number of elections that have taken place in the year 2015 and more scheduled for 2016, countries such as Guinea, Tanzania, Zambia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Lesotho, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Mozambiques and Burundi among others are set for elections in these two years.

What is the progress that has been made by Member states in the implementation of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance that has international standards of good governance and democracy in   areas such as rule of law, free and fair elections, and unconstitutional changes of government?
