Pistorius family bemoans no parole decision

Read < 1 minute

There’s been mixed reaction to a parole boards decision not to grant Oscar Pistorius early release from prison.

A panel ruled Monday that the Paralympic must not be granted parole and instead needs therapy.

Pistorius was sentenced to 5 years for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. But under South Africa law, he is eligible for parole after just ten months behind bars.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide – which is similar to manslaughter.

Prosecutors want him convicted for murder, and that carries a jail sentence of up to 25 years. They’re to appeal in November arguing the original trial judge misinterpreted the law.
