The call by Senegal’s Macky Sall for shorter presidential term limits puts him in a very small minority. Other African leaders have sought to extend their stay in office and some say there should be no time limit on how long they should rule.
As head of the African Union, Mugabe has said he does not believe in presidential term limits for Africa – that presidents should serve for as long as the people want them.
Many seem to agree with him.
Just recently regional body ECOWAS proposed limiting presidents to two terms – but dropped the plan, thanks to opposition from Gambia and Togo.
Congo-Brazzaville and Rwanda are looking to change their constitutions – so their presidents can have another term. There is speculation the DR Congo will do the same.
For many younger people, Presidential term limits have been an issue frequently debated on digital media, one that’s become an increasing focus of late.
Almost a year ago, in Burkina Faso, long-time president Blaise Compaoré was ousted after he attempted to change the constitution to stay in power.
Burundi has also been wracked by months of violence – following the president’s decision to run for a third term.
Will other African leaders follow the example of Senegal?
