Uganda and Ethiopia strengthen defense ties
Uganda and Ethiopia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen defence ties.
The MoU was signed by Uganda’s Defence Minister, Crispus Kiyonga, and his Ethiopian counterpart, Siraj Fegessa, at the Mbuya Army Headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday.
The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Uganda defence force chief General Katumba Wamala, Ministry of defence Permanent Secretary Rosette Byengoma, Maj-Gen.
James Mugira, the managing director of Luweero Defence Industries, and Ethiopian Ambassador to Uganda Degefe Bula.
Kiyonga said the MoU was aimed at strengthening the co-operation between the two countries in defence matters to enforce peace and stability in the region.
Among the key areas reviewed was the situation in South Sudan and Somalia, and terrorism in the region.
The two countries agreed to safeguard peace and security, promote common values and other fundamental interests of the region and Africa.
Fegessa commended Uganda’s efforts to promote peace in the region and in Africa at large.
Last year the two countries also signed several MoUs on energy, health, transport and establishment of co-operation between their capital cities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
