Many experience difficulties while trying to leave Burundi

As the political unrest continues to rock Burundi, refugee influx continues into Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is estimated that over 50, 000 Burundian refugees have fled to nneighboring states in the past few weeks. Rwanda alone, has received over 25,000 Burundian refugees.

Over 17,000 have crossed into Tanzania and almost 8,000 into the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Relief agencies are appealing for support as thousands more refugees are expected.

New arrivals have also reported of harassment and intimidation as they flee Burundi. The UNHCR is appealing to the authorities in Burundi to allow people to move freely, saying it is vital that borders remain open
