At least nine people were killed and scores others injured, after a bus they were travelling in overturned outside Paulpietersburg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, authorities said Sunday.

Road traffic authorities said approximately 70 people were on board the vehicle, when it lost control and rolled over early on Sunday morning.

The passengers were travelling from the African National Congress’ manifesto launch at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The ANC has sent its condolences to the families of those killed.

“It is a true tragedy that there has been such a loss of lives after a memorable day. Their selflessness and commitment to building a better future will for generations to come will forever be remembered,” the ruling party said in a statement.

President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the ANC’s electoral campaign on Saturday, promising to create jobs and to end crippling power cuts among other issues.

South Africans are set to vote in the national and provincial elections on May 29.
