Libya’s coastguard has claimed that it rescued more than 120 migrants on Monday after the engine of their rubber dingy broke down as they tried to sail to Europe across the Mediterranean.

This is the second such operation in just a matter of days after another 104 migrants were rescued on Thursday in the same area under almost similar circumstances.

Reports say that the migrants from Arab and African countries included 10 women and were taken ashore aboard two boats and later transferred to a reception area in the capital.

Libya has for a long time been a stepping stone for African migrants seeking a better life in Europe.

Human traffickers have taken advantage of the chaos in Libya since the 2011 uprising that toppled long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The cartels have since stepped up their lucrative business.

They take would-be migrants on board wobbly boats for the treacherous Mediterranean crossing.

Just last month, a boat ferrying 400 migrants sank off the western Libyan port of Zuwara killing more than half of its passengers.
