Supporters lined up the streets of Kampala to cheer their respective candidates on the day of nominations for presidential candidates.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has been endorsed by his ruling party NRM to run for a fifth term in office. He faces competition from nine other candidates with the stiffest competition believed to be from long term rival Kiza Besigye and former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.

Kiza Besigye is the flag bearer of the biggest opposition party in Uganda, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). He is expected to be nominated as the presidential candidate for the party on Wednesday.

Amama Mbabazi, the former prime minister and once closest friend to President Museveni was also nominated by his party. Amama will be running against Museveni as a private candidate for the first time.

Ugandan police have been known to run battles with the opposition during some of the opposition’s rallies. This is Part of the reasons why the opposition politicians have pointed fingers at the government for infringing on their freedoms. Uganda’s electoral body has warned against violence during campaigns.
