Kenya’s duo of Vivian Cheruiyot and Hellen Obiri shocked Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana in the women’s final 5,000 meters race to secure gold and silver respectively, leaving the Ethiopian to settle for bronze.

Ayana had cruised to victory in the women’s 10,000 meters race, setting an Olympic record, and was seen as favourite to lift gold in the 5,000 meters race.

Cheruiyot becomes the first ever Kenyan woman to win the Olympics 5,000 meters race, and she did so in style, setting a new record of 14:26:17.

“It’s my fourth Olympics and I hadn’t had gold. Today I said ‘I am not going to lose’,” she said.

Kenya now has five gold medals and fie silver medals from the Rio Games, ranking at position 16 to maintain being Africa’s leading country at the ongoing Olympic Games.

South Africa lies at a further position 37 with just one gold medal, 6 silver medals and two bronze medals.

Ethiopia is the third best ranking African nation, standing at position 44 with one gold medal, one silver medal and four bronze medals.
