Zimbabwe’s opposition to challenge presidential election result in court

MDC Alliance’s Nelson Chamisa claims the presidential election result was doctored to favour Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Zimbabwe’s opposition MDC Alliance on Wednesday announced that it would file a petition in court to challenge the results of the July 30 presidential poll.

Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared winner of the election with 50.8 percent of the vote while MDC Alliance’s Nelson Chamisa received 44.3 percent.

Chamisa however claims the result was doctored to favour Mnangagwa, and that he won the vote.

The deadline for the filling of court petitions to challenge the result is Friday, 10 August.

According to Zimbabwe’s constitution, a court challenge to the election results must be lodged within seven days after the declaration of the election results.

After a challenge has been lodged and served, the Constitutional Court has 14 days to hear and decide it and decision is final.

“We are going to place all that evidence before the court but that evidence derives from source documents, that evidence derives from ZEC’s own figures which in our view are grossly made up, which mathematically failed to tally,” Mpofu said.
