A schoolgirl from Zimbabwe’s second city of Bulawayo has appeared in court three months after she gave birth in secret and hid her baby in her school bag where it died, the state-controlled Chronicle reported on Thursday.
The 17-year-old was a pupil at Eveline High School, a well-known secondary school in the centre of the city.
The Chronicle said she gave birth at her home in Nkulumane township on January 31.
The girl’s sister found the baby in a bag in the girl’s wardrobe and called her mother, who saw that the child had already died.
The family “took the heart-breaking decision of shopping the teenager – who had hidden her pregnancy from the family – to the police,” the Chronicle said.
The girl has been charged with concealment of a birth and was remanded out of custody.
Last September a girl at another high school in Bulawayo gave birth to a baby in the school toilets. A teacher heard the baby crying and the girl was taken to hospital.
