Zimbabwe was readmitted as a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the conclusion of the ICC Board meetings in Dubai.
Zimbabwe was sanctioned in July this year after the Zimbabwe Cricket Board was suspended by the government in June and replaced with an interim committee. Funding from the sport’s governing body was also withdrawn.
Present at the meeting were Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani and Zimbabwe Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry and Chairman of the Sports and Recreation Commission Gerald Mlotshwa.
ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar expressed his gratitude to Coventry, a former Olympic swimming champion, for her commitment to the reinstatement of Zimbabwe Cricket.
“Her desire to work in support of Zimbabwe Cricket was clear and she has unconditionally complied with the conditions set down by the ICC Board. Funding to Zimbabwe Cricket will continue to be on a controlled basis as part of a collective effort behind getting the game in Zimbabwe back on an even keel,” Manohar said.
Zimbabwe will now be able to participate in the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup in January 2020 and the ICC Super League later in 2020, according to the ICC.
However, the timing of the end of the suspension means Zimbabwe will miss out on the 2020 World Twenty20 qualifying tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
Zimbabwe, currently ranked 11th in the ICC Test rankings, not played a Test since November 2018.
