President Robert Mugabe has been appointed the World Health Organisation’s (W.H.O.) “goodwill ambassador” to help tackle non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Mugabe, who has been under international scrutiny for humans rights abuses, will take on the role of tackling NCDs such as heart attacks, strokes and asthma across Africa.

The new head of W.H.O., Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Zimbabwe for its commitment to public health.

The appointment angered international rights campaigners and opposition parties, who also accuse Mugabe of violent repression, election rigging and presiding over the country’s economic ruin, according to AFP.

Dr Tedros, who is Ethiopian, is the first African to lead the WHO.
