Zimbabwe government declares state of national disaster due to biting hunger
The Zimbabwean government has declared a state of national disaster, with up to 4 million Zimbabweans facing hunger following poor harvests and a harsh El Nino induced drought.
The government has appealed for $1.6 billion in food aid to cushion the effects of the harsh drought.
Farmers have already lost cattle and crops and fear the situation will worsen as the year progresses.
Reports show that by March this year 4 million Zimbabweans needed food aid, an increase from an initial 3 million.
Southern Africa is facing the worst drought in the last century
Aid agencies warn the lack of water may also result in the spread of diseases.
