Zimbabwe Cricket Squad Lands in Pakistan amid Heavy Security
The Zimbabwe cricket team arrived in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore from Harare. The Southern African side are the first test-playing nation to tour Pakistan since a gun attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009 left six Pakistani policemen and a van driver dead.
Some players and a local umpire were injured. Armed security personnel guarded the airport and a large convoy of security vehicles escorted the team’s buses as they drove to their hotel in the city. The Zimbabwe tour was thrown in doubt last week when an islamist attack on a bus killed 47 people in Karachi. Pakistan is making a show of security for the tour. Security forces have displayed their readiness in and around the Gaddafi stadium where all the matches will be played.
