Health authorities in Zimbabwe have begun an oral cholera vaccination campaign in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai.

The campaign targets close to 500,000 people and will be carried out in the districts of Chimanimani and Chipinge.

The two districts were the most affected by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe.

Despite the vaccination campaign, the WHO says there have been no reported cases of cholera in the cyclone-affected areas in Zimbabwe.

The WHO, however, says the effects of Idai have put children and families at risk of waterborne and foodborne diseases. Water distribution systems, pumping stations and boreholes were damaged during the storm.

The WHO says all residents aged 12 months and older will receive the vaccine to protect them against cholera.

The second round of vaccines is to be administered two weeks after the first. More than 975,000 doses will be administered in two rounds for full immunity.
